Artist Statement: As a genderqueer trans artist, I believe taking part in your own creation via transition is one of the holiest experiences. I wanted to reimagine the famous Creation of Adam painting within that context to defy the narratives that demonize trans people today and re-contextualize the trans experience as an enlightenment. In my version, the subject is being called upon by the truest version of their Self, supported by their trans siblings, to take part in their creation as Adamina. This piece celebrates the incredible and unique experience of taking that leap forward to become your actualized self and the wonderful community that comes along with that bravery. The angels of the original reference have been portrayed as mostly people of color as a nod to the queer black and brown ancestors that paved the way for the rest of us, and I used a recycled canvas with some left over texture underneath to further the theme of reinvention and renewal.
